Sesa Goa's Metallurgical Coke Division - a 100% owned subsidiary of Sesa Goa Limited develops markets and supports technologies for the coke making technology. This technology was originally developed for use in our own operations and is now being marketed for use by third parties worldwide.

Sesa Energy Recovery Coke making is one such technology that has been developed through in-house efforts.
Sesa in 1993 have gone in for non-recovery met coke ovens based on the Australian know-how. However, its first installation at Amona, Goa witnessed serious technological drawback/lacunae that resulted in major debacle, which required a total relook into the basic design of ovens.
Sesa Goa's team did a detailed experimentation involving studies on the temperature profile of the oven and redesigning the refractories. Followed by the systematic plant trials, culminated in the development of energy recovery coke making, an environment-friendly technology that is characterized low capital and operating cost, high energy recovery and capable of producing high quality metallurgical coke currently, the ovens are being operated at a low conversion cost per tonne of coke.
The recent years have witnessed the technology of densification of coal charge employing vibro-compaction for producing stable coal cake with bulk density superior to competing technologies have been introduced. Compact charging technology has a potential for introduction of semisoft cheaper coals to the tune of 70% without affecting the targeted blast furnace coke quality. The technology is a two-product process, high quality metallurgical coke as the main product, the sensible heat of the exhaust flue gas as a co-product that can be optimally utilized for production of clean electricity/power.
The Sesa Coke Making Technology offered in standard modules of 300,000 tonnes per annum that has a potential to generate 21 MW of electrical energy from a coal charge of 24% volatile matter, the project merits substantial carbon credits. The Sesa Energy Recovery Coke making Technology is a leading coke making technology with the lowest capital and operating costs with a potential of exporting to the world, which has a distinction of being a major technological innovation in the metallurgical field.
Met Coke Division of Sesa has setup a state-of-the art coal carbonization laboratory, which has modern equipment/instruments for coal characterization and evaluation of coke quality. The 11 kg laboratory oven and one tonne pilot non-recovery oven developed in-house are extensively used in the selection of coals for coke making and optimization of coal blends.
